Google Panda Update 23 Update

Google has confirmed rumors of a Google update announced on Twitter that they pushed out a Panda data refresh yesterday impacting about 1.3% of English queries.

This would make for the 23rd Panda update since the first Panda algorithm was introduced on February 24, 2011. Since then we had 22 updates both to the algorithm and also to the index or data refreshes came this year.

The latest impacted 1.3% of the queries, whereas version 22 impacted only 0.8% of English queries in Google.

We did see signs of a major update a week ago but Google told us there was no such update. Then again, I reported early signs of another update at the Search Engine Roundtable and Google confirmed it on Twitter.

Honestly, I am surprised they released a data refresh right before Christmas. Last year Google promised they would not update the Panda algorithm or do data refreshes until after the holidays – this year, I guess they decided not to wait.

Google allows 10 GB attachments Files in Gmail

If you feel the 25MB limit for attachments files in Gmail is not enough? The search giant has integrated Google Drive-based attachments in its email service so that users can now send files up to 10GB size. Google Driveis the company's cloud storage service, similar to Microsoft SkyDrive and DropBox services.

On the official Gmail blog, Phil Sharp, Gmail product manager, posted: "you can insert files from Drive directly into an email without leaving your Gmail." He added, "...with Drive, you can insert files up to 10GB -- 400 times larger than what you can send as a traditional attachment. Also, because you're sending a file stored in the cloud, all your recipients will have access to the same, most-up-to-date version."

Google Panda Refresh or Update 22 Nov 2012

There is another Google update started around Friday November 16th confirmed by Google.
It is Panda refresh or update. But the discussion seems that it was a small Panda refresh this past Friday, November 16th.
If it is Panda refresh, this would only put about two weeks between Panda Update 21 and this Panda refresh on Friday 16 Nov 2012.

Google Panda Update 21, Impacts on US Queries {English}

Slight shaking in the Google results now a days. Yes, its real. Google has confirmed that a Panda Update 21 happened 5 Nov 2012.

Google said that worldwide, the update will impact about 0.4% of queries that a regular user might notice this effect. For those searching in the United States in English, the percentage is higher. 1.1%, Google confirmed.

Free Search App for Apple Devices by Google

There’s a new search application for Apple devices courtesy of Google.
The search engine giant is offering a free voice search app for the iPhone and iPad — a direct challenge to Apple’s virtual voice-driven assistant, Siri software.

The new app, which is also for Android devices, is about convenience and finding answers effortlessly, says Kenneth Bongort, a Google search engineer, in a blog post.

“Fast and accurate voice recognition technology enables Google to understand exactly what you’re saying,” the post reads. “Getting an answer is as simple as tapping on the microphone icon and asking a question like, ‘Is United Airlines flight 318 on time?’ Your words appear as you speak, you get your answer immediately and — if it’s short and quick, like the status and departure time of your flight — Google tells you the answer aloud.”

The system, which is powered by Google’s Knowledge Graph, aids the app in relating a search with its intended meaning.

Despite, the early rave reviews Google’s new app has received for being lightening fast and accurate, some critics say it not only cannot carry on a conversation like Siri can, but it lacks the system-wide functionality as well. Siri critics, however, say the Apple app is slower and less able to answer complex questions than Google’s version.

Although Siri has received its fair share of criticism, Apple has promised its virtual voice-driven assistant will continue to improve as it becomes more and more integrated into iOS.

Google -950 Penalty Is Back Again ?

Google's (-950) "minus 950" penalty comes up every now and then and now it is coming up again at the WebmasterWorld forums.

The thread goes into how a few webmasters are claiming around the time of the Google EMD update they got hit by a -950 penalty. Now, they all say they do not have exact match domains, and so do not qualify for the EMD updates. Note, Panda also struck down around then, but they claim they are not a Panda like site yet.

So now the question is, can we recover from a -950 penalty ? In 2007, Google's Matt Cutts confirmed the -950 penalty which is related to over optimization.

Finally officially as promised Google launched a disavow link tool 16 October afternoon. It was officially launched during the lunch with Matt Cutts at PubCon Vegas.

"Matt Cutts said repeatedly at PubCon, on the video (see below) and in the blog post that you should try not to use it, don't use it, really. Why? One example he said is do not disavow internal links - it can hurt. Right, Google is just using this as a "hint" or "signal" now, like they did with the rel=canonical when that launched, but this will be a powerful signal within 6 months - so be careful if you have to use it."

This is an advanced feature in google webamster but it should used with caution. If you used incorrectly this feature can potentially harm your website ranking & performance. Google recomends that you should only disavow backlinks if you considerable number of links are spamy, unnatural, artificial, low quality links, giving links to your website & you are sure that those are causing issues / problems to your website performance.
